Bulls Sweep Weekend Vs. Fort McMurray

06/21/2016 12:52 PM -

It was a beautiful Father’s day afternoon at a packed Spitz Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Bulls gave Lethbridge Dads exactly what they wanted with a 8-2 win over the Fort McMurray Giants to sweep the 3 game weekend set. Lethbridge had the lead the whole game. The Giants made it close in the top of the 7th when they put up two runs to pull within 4-2. Shortly after in the bottom of the 8th inning with Handley and Ray on base, Mitch McGeein hit a towering 3-run opposite field bomb to put the game out of reach.

Pat Kelly had the ball for the Bulls on Father’s Day, and he shut down the Giants offence for most of the afternoon.  Kelley’s line finished with: 7.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 4 SO. In relief of Kelly was Kregg Snook who has been a very reliable option for the Bulls out of the pen this season. Snook tossed to only 4 batters in one inning of work with one strikeout. Closing the game was side-winder Caleb Norton who kept the Giants hitters off balance picking up two swinging strike-outs.

“Great work from our pitching staff this afternoon; they battled hard all day did and did a great job of locating up when they needed to. Pat’s quality start today is what the bullpen fed off, and they continued it.”  Said Coach MacDonald after the win.

The hottest hitting team in the WMBL came out with a bang when Lead-off hitter Ryan Pouwells singled to lead off the game. Following him was Handley with an opposite field double, which quickly gave the Bulls runners on 2nd and 3rd with nobody out. 3-4 hole hitters Mitch McGeein and Mitch Dornblut manufactured the first two runs of the game with deep fly balls and tagging runners to advance and score. In the 8th inning is where things got exciting for the offense when only up 3 the Bulls hottest hitter Mitch McGeein punched a ball over the fence putting the Boys up by 6 over the Giants going into the 9th.

“This game is exactly what we wanted to see out of the boys, being up 4 and then down to 2 run lead they knew when it was time to put the other team away and that’s exactly what happened in the 8th inning”

Defensively, both teams had one error a piece making the Father’s Day match-up a clean well-played game.

Stay tuned for Tuesday night’s 7:05 match-up vs. Medicine Hat Mavericks who are currently the only team in the WMBL that have more wins than the Bull, which will hopefully change on Tuesday night at Spitz Stadium. Don’t forget to purchase tickets at the gate or stop into the Spitz Stadium office and pre-book seating.
