Bulls Drop a Tough One to Medicine Hat

07/05/2016 10:33 AM -

The Bulls hosted Medicine Hat last night at Spitz Stadium, and when the dust settled the Bulls were on the wrong side of an 8-6 game. As has been the case on many occasions this year a couple of mistakes ended up costing the Bulls dearly in the game. The Bulls showed heart and made a valiant comeback, but ended up falling 2 runs short.

Luc Hebert started on the mound for the Bulls. The second year Bulls pitcher from PBA struggled, and was the victim of some untimely defense. Hebert gave up 4 runs in the first after a ground ball error to the second batter of the game cost the Bulls a chance to get out of the inning without any runs being scored. Med Hat added to their lead with a run in the 3rd and 3 more runs in the 5th inning to make the score 8-0. Mackenzie Major came in relief of Hebert and did an outstanding job keeping the Mavs off the score sheet, and giving his team a chance to get back in the ball game.

After being held scoreless through the first 4 innings of the game the Bulls battled in the middle innings to make the game interesting. A solo shot from Dominic Mercurio in the bottom of the 5th got the boys on the board. They followed that with a 4 run 6th inning that included an RBI double from Travis Steinke, and a 3 run shot to right centre field from Lachlan Mayo. Through 6 innings the boys were within 3 runs. The Bulls didn’t go down without a fight in the 9th inning. An RBI single by Mitch Dornblut got the boys within 2, and the winning run was at the plate, but a ground ball to the shortstop from Lachlan Mayo ended the evening for the Bulls.

It has been a frustrating stretch for the Bulls over the last two weeks, especially against the division leading Mavericks. The Bulls are now 0-3 against Medicine Hat. In the first two games the Bulls held leads late into the contests only to watch them evaporate into Med Hat wins. On Monday night early mistakes put the lead a little bit too far out of reach to complete the comeback. Luckily the Bulls will have a chance tonight to get back at the Mavs in Medicine Hat. The second half of the home and home will take place at Athletic Park starting at 7:05pm.
