Bulls Take 2 On Canada Day!

07/03/2017 2:40 PM -

It wasn't the easiest way to get it done, but the Bulls pulled out two wins on Canada Day in front of two big crowds at Spitz Stadium. In game 1 of the doubleheader the Bulls fought their way to a 12-11 victory in the bottom of the 9th inning. In game two it was a much cleaner game with the Bulls finishing on top 12-5 in front of a Spitz Stadium record crowd of 2268. Everyone from the Bulls organization would like to thank all the fans who came out to support the Bulls on Canada Day.

In Game 1 the Bulls got off to a great start putting up 8 runs in the first two innings. Brock Frentzel hit a 3 run shot to right field in the first, and Alex Bishop hit a 2 run homer in the 2nd. The Yorkton Cardinals fought the Bulls every step of the way scoring runs in each of the first 5 innings of the ball game. After 5 innings, the Bulls held a 9-8 lead. Heading to the 9th the Bulls were up 2 runs, and had the usually automatic Chris Stodolka in the game. Yorkton was down to their final out, and grinded out 2 runs to tie the game at 11. The Bulls had to walk it off to win, and that is exactly what they did. Brett Brittany led off the bottom of the 9th with a triple, and Ryan Pouwells completed an outstanding day by singling in Brittany for the win. Pouwells finished the day 5-6 with 3 runs scored and 4 RBI's. Alex Bishop was 2-2 with 3 runs and 4 RBI's, and Brock Frentzel was 1-3 with a run and 3 RBI's.

In game 2 of the doubleheader the Bulls again came out hot out of the gate. After 2 innings of play the Bulls held a 8-0 lead to the delight of the capacity crowd. Catcher, Carter Witbeck hit a 2 RBI double in the 1st to give the Bulls a 3-0 lead, and Alex Bishop hit his 2nd homerun of the day, a 3 run shot to cap off a 5 run second inning. Those 8 runs were plenty for starting pitcher Brady Moxham who threw a gem of a game. Moxham threw 8 innings, with 10 strikeouts, and 4 ER. If it wasn't for a little lapse on defense in the 8th inning Moxham may have had a shot to finish the game out. Instead Hunter Cunningham came in the 9th to finish the game off. Alex Bishop finished the night game 2-4 with a run and 4 RBI, Dylan Borman was 2-3 with 2 runs scored, Carter Witbeck chipped in 3 RBI's while going 2-5, and Ryan Pouwells was 1-3 with 3 runs scored out of the leadoff spot. It was great to see the Bulls offense breakout after struggling a little bit in their 6 straight games against the Okotoks Dawgs.

As of Monday July 3rd, the Bulls sit tied with the Okotoks Dawgs at 16-9 in the West Division. Edmonton sits 1.5 games back of 1st, and Medicine Hat 2.5 games back. In the East Division Regina has a half game lead over the Bulls and Dawgs at 16-8 for the top record in the WMBL. The Bulls host the Melville Millionaires for two games tonight and tomorrow at Spitz Stadium. Melville sits in last place in the East through 25 games.
