The Bulls first home game of the regular season was on a cold, rainy night in June against the Medicine Hat Mavericks, and their final game of the play offs was at home on a cold, rainy night in August against Medicine Hat.

John Mathews and Erik Church did their best imitation of a dynamic duo, as the Mavericks beat the Bulls 6-1 Wednesday night at Spitz Stadium to take the deciding game of their best of five divisional semi-final series.

Mathews dominated the game, both on the mound and at the plate. He was the winning pitcher, going six scoreless innings, allowing three hits and walking one batter. And at the plate he hit clean up, going 4 for 4, with a double, a two run home run, and four RBIs.

Meanwhile Church filfilled the role of Mathews' sidekick.  Batting in the three spot, the Mavericks all-star outfielder was 4 for 5 with two runs scored.

Medicine Hat led 3-0 after six innings and put the game away in the top of the seventh. Mathews blasted a two run homer to left field off Bulls reliever Richard Pharr, and also brought home Church, who got the inning started with a base hit. Alex Chavez followed with a double and scored on an RBI single by John McNeil.

Medicine Hat was able to turn back two threats the Bulls mounted, one with a tremendous defensive play and the other with clutch pitching.

Josh Lowden doubled to lead off the Bulls fifth and moved to third base on a ground out. Eric Dorton hit a two out line drive to right center that looked like it would drop in the gap for a certain double to score Lowden. But Chavez made a flat out diving catch to end the potential rally and the inning.

Katlin Nunweiler replaced Mathews on the mound in the seventh inning. He proceeded to walk the first two batters, Jesse Sawyer and Lowden. Brenden Miller moved the base runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, and Scott Hornstra was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. But Nunweiler buckled down and struck out both Dorton and Ryan MacDonald looking.

The Bulls got their only run in the eighth off Nunweiler. Joel Blake and Dustin Bissonnette opened the home half of the eighth with base hits. A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position and Blake came home on a sacrifice fly by Sawyer.

Starter Alex Tufts was the losing pitcher. He went six innings, allowed three runs on six hits, struck out six and walked three. Pharr pitched the seventh and allowed three runs on four hits and walked one. Jimmy Munnil came in for the eighth and Steve Hogue for the ninth.

Medicine Hat out hit the Bulls 13-5. Bissonnette was 2 for 4 and Lowden's double was the only extra base hit.

The Mavericks now face the defending league champion Okotoks Dawgs in the West Division Final. The best of five series is scheduled to get underway Thursday night in Okotoks.
