PostHeaderIcon Bulls Win A Rain-Shortened Game Over Okotoks

It was developing into a game of small ball versus the long ball until a heavy rain shower hit Spitz Stadium in the middle of the fifth inning Tuesday night. That was enough to make the field too wet for further play. The coaches agreed to to call the game at that point, and it goes into the books as an official game and an 8-4 win for the Bulls.

It would've taken over an hour to get the field ready again after the heavy rain shower, and both teams didn't want to risk any injuries with the play offs starting on Friday.

The Bulls jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning.  Joel Blake and Dustin Bissonnette, just back from the World Baseball Challenge in Prince George, both walked.  Zach Rhodes reached on a bunt single to load the bases.  Brendan Miller scored Blake on a ground out, and Josh Lowden drove in Bissonnette and Rhodes with a base hit.

Okotoks got one run back in the second when Chris Williams hit a home run off starter Brandon Petite. The Bulls got two runs in their half of the second. Eric Dorton scored on an error after leading off with a base hit. Blake grounded out to drive in Ryan MacDonald, who struck out against Dawgs starter Jake Bottari, but reached first base when the pitch eluded the catcher and went to the back stop.

Okotoks made it a 5-4 game with three runs in the top of third. Travis McBride hit a three homer after Alex Jensen and Matt Hart both walked.

But the Bulls came right back with two more runs in the bottom of the third. After Jesse Sawyer slammed a lead off double and Lowden walked, Scott Hornstra drove in Sawyer with a ground out. Eric Dorton doubled to bring in Lowden. Blake got the Bulls eighth run in the fourth. He lead off with a double and came home on a passed ball.

Taylor Reid replaced Petite in the fourth and was the winning pitcher, giving him a record of 2 and 5. Petite went three innings, allowed four runs on three hits, walked four, and had seven strikeouts. Ariel Perez pitched a scoreless fifth. The Bulls got seven hits in the game. Dorton was 2 for 2 with a double, an RBI and a run scored.

The Bulls wrap up the regular season at home Wednesday against the Medicine Hat Mavericks. It's Fan Appreciation Night with prize draws through out the evening. Game time is 7:05.

It's also a preview of an opening round play off match up. Medicine Hat swept a doubleheader with Edmonton Tuesday (5-2 and 8-3) to clinch the final play off spot in the West Division. The Bulls host the Mavericks for the first two games of a best-of-five series Friday (July 31) and Saturday (August 1) nights at 7:05. Game three, and game four if necessary, will be in Medicine Hat Sunday and Monday (August 2 and 3). If a fifth game is needed it will be played in Lethbridge next Tuesday (August 4).
