Bulls Lose In Uncharacteristic Fashion
The Bulls have won a number of games this season by taking a lead into the seventh inning and then turning it over to the bullpen to shut down the other team. But that formula didn't work Saturday night, as the Moose Jaw Express came back from a three run deficit to record a 4-3 win.
All four runs were scored off the Bulls usually reliable bullpen. The loss spoiled a solid pitching performance by starter Taylor Reid. He went five shut out innings, allowed three hits, had two strikeouts, no walks, and one hit batsman.
The Bulls built up a 3-0 lead with single runs in the second, fifth and sixth. Jared Mortenson replaced Reid in the sixth and struck out side. Richard Pharr came in for the seventh and got the first two batters. But Chris Gordon reached base on a bunt single and Michael Hunt followed with a broken bat infield hit. The ball dribbled back toward the mound and Pharr couldn't get to it in time. Then Moose Jaw lead off hitter Jordan Smith parked a Pharr offering over the left field fence for a three run homer to tie the game.
Jimmy Munnil came in for the eighth and retired Moose Jaw in order. He usually pitches one inning, but returned to the mound for the ninth. Cory Olafson lead off with a base hit for Moose Jaw and Jerry Hildreth entered the game to pinch run for Olafson. Derek Johnson followed with a base hit, sending Hildreth to third. Gordon was up next, and he drove Hildreth in with a sacrfice fly.
Joel Blake managed a one out base hit in the bottom of the ninth. But the next two batters went out and Moose Jaw had a come-from-behind victory. Sean Lydon got the win, pitching a complete game.
Munnil was the losing pitcher, dropping his record to 0 and 2. The Bulls had nine hits. Blake was 3 for 5 and was the only player in the line up with more than one hit.
The Bulls are now 22 and 20, but have clinched second place in the West Division. They visit Okotoks Sunday and Medicine Hat Monday. Then close out the regular season with a pair of home games, Tuesday against Okotoks, and Wednesday against Medicine Hat for Fan Appreciation Night.
