Dawgs Get The Best of The Bulls, Again
It's getting to be a familiar pattern of oneupmanship and "whatever you can do we can do better". For the second game in a row the Okotoks Dawgs thwarted a Bulls attempted-comeback and held on for another one run victory. This time it was 11-10 in front of over 23-hundred people Sunday at Seeman Stadium in Okotoks.
The Dawgs held an auction similar to one the Bulls had earlier in the season to raise money for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. But while the Bulls auctioned off the pinks caps they wore in their game, the Dawgs wore special edition pink jerseys that went to the highest bidder. Twenty-two thousand dollars was raised for the Breast Cancer Foundation.
Okotoks jumped out to a 7-0 lead after four innings, chasing losing pitcher Taylor Reid from the game. He gave up ten hits, walked three and struck out two.
The Bulls chipped away at the lead with one run in the fifth, two in the sixth, and two more in the seventh. However Okotoks added three more runs off reliever Richard Pharr to make the score 10-5 after seven innings.
The Bulls scored two more runs in the top of the eighth, but Okotoks got what turned out to be the winning run in the bottom of the frame off Jimmy Munnil, the third pitcher to take the mound for the Bulls in the game.
Three more runs in the top of the ninth made it a one run game. The Bulls had the tying and go-ahead runs on base with two out. But a ground ball to shortstop for a force out at second ended the game.
The teams hammered out a total of 30 hits...17 for Okotoks and 13 for the Bulls, who move to 20 and 17 with the loss.
Joel Blake had another productive game at the plate. The second year catcher-designated hitter went 3 for 5 for the second consecutive game with a double, a triple and an RBI. Eric Dorton was 3 for 5 with an RBI. The Bulls also hit a pair of two run homers...Josh Lowden went yard in the sixth...and Jesse Sawyer touched'em all in the eighth with a man on.
Team Alberta pays a visit to Spitz Stadium for an exhibition game Monday night. It's also the third annual "Strike Out Hunger" night, with the Bulls collecting food items for the Interfaith Food Bank. Fans who bring a non-perishable food item to the game get in for just two dollars. Game time is 7:05. Another trip to Okotoks Tuesday is followed by a make up game Wednesday night at Spitz Stadium. The Bulls host the Edmonton Prospects for a 7:05 game that was originally scheduled for July 14, but was rained out.
