Bulls Double Up Red Sox
It was 70's Night at Spitz Stadium Friday, a promotion sponsored by 94.1 "The Lounge" the Bulls official radio station. An appropriate theme for "Street Wheelers" weekend in Lethbridge. And while the muscle cars of the 1970's roared away on Mayor Magrath Drive outside the ballpark, the Bulls responded with an 8-4 win over the Regina Red Sox.
The game was scoreless through three innings, with Regina taking a 2-0 lead on single runs in the fourth and fifth off starter Alex Tufts, before the Bulls bats came alive. Three runs in the fifth, and three more in the sixth, gave the home side a 6-2 lead.
Outfielder Zach Rhodes was 4 for 5 in the game with a double in the fifth that drove in two runs. Three Regina errors and two passed balls in the sixth proved costly as the Bulls added three more runs.
Tufts went six innings to record his third win of the season (3-2). He gave up two runs on seven hits, struck out five and walked three. Newcomer Ariel Perez saw his first action on the mound for the Bulls, pitching the seventh and eighth. He gave up two runs in his first inning of work, but settled down in the eighth and retired the Red Sox in order. Jared Mortenson pitched a scoreless ninth.
Along with Rhodes going 4 for 5, Jesse Sawyer was 2 for 5, and Jamie Mitchell was 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. Ryan MacDonald also drove in a run with a double and scored twice.
The Bulls out hit Regina 13-11 and improve to 18 and 14. The teams meet again Saturday night, with the first pitch at 7:05. The Bulls will also be "Batting Against Breast Cancer", with the team wearing pink caps for the occasion, that were sold by silent auction and presented to the highest bidder after the game.
Fans are invited to participate in the campaign as well, through the "Pound The Red Sox" promotion. Fans can pay to take their best shot with a baseball bat at an old used car outside Spitz Stadium. All the proceeds from the cap auction and the car bash will go to the Breast Cancer Foundation.
The Bulls special weekend continues Sunday night with an Alumni Game at 6:05 as part of the club's tenth anniversary celebrations. Several former players and coaches will be on hand for the event.
