Bulls Beat Beavers And Bounce Back To .500
The Weyburn Beavers gave the Bulls all they could handle for five innings. But the Bulls broke a 4-4 tie in the seventh inning and went on to an 8-6 win Sunday night at Spitz Stadium.
Weyburn took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first and were up 3-1 after three. The Bulls tied the game in the fourth on a two RBI base hit by first baseman Brendon Miller. The Beavers got a fourth run off starter Matt Bannister in the fifth. But the Bulls tied it again in the bottom of the frame. Zach Rhodes drove in Stephen Hobbins, who lead off the bottom of the fifth with a base hit.
The Bulls sent eight men to the plate in the seventh and scored twice. Josh Lowden doubled to score Rhodes and Dustin Bissonnette, putting the home side up by a pair of runs. Lowden followed up with another base hit in the eighth to drive in two more runs, giving the Bulls an 8-4 lead.
Weyburn scored twice in the ninth to make it interesting. But reliever Rob Hogue got a strike out and a ground out back to the mound to end the game. It's the third straight win for the Bulls and evens their record at 11 and 11.
Bannister went seven innings for the win, improving his record to 2 and 1. He allowed four runs on five hits, struck out three, and didn't walk anyone.
Richard Pharr pitched the eighth and had an unusual outing. He hit the first batter he faced, walked the next man, then threw the ball into centerfield on a pick off attempt that went awry. But all's well that ends well...Pharr quickly regained his focus and struck out the Beavers two, three, and four hitters to end the threat.
Miller and Lowden collected six of the Bulls ten hits. Miller was 3 for 3 with a double and three RBI's. Lowden was 3 for 4 with a double, four RBI's, and had the game winning hit. Hobbins, hitting out of the nine spot, was 2 for 3 with two runs scored.
The Bulls host Weyburn again Monday night with game time 7:05 at Spitz Stadium. Then after a day off Tuesday, it's a full day of activities at the ballpark for Canada Day.
The ball club is hosting a pancake breakfast in the morning from 8 am til 11 am followed by two games against the Edmonton Prospects. The first game at one o'clock in the afternoon is a make-up for an earlier rain out. Then the regular Sun Life Financial Canada Day game goes at 7:35 pm, a half later than the usual evening start.
Fans are invited to stay after the game and come on the field to watch the fireworks over Henderson Lake. So come celebrate Canada Day and the Bulls Tenth Anniversary. Tickets are now available for both games on July 1.
