Second year starter Alex Tufts has been a hard luck pitcher for the Bulls so far this season. Going into Saturday night's game against Medicine Hat he was 0 and 2 in four starts, despite the fact he has the lowest earned run average (3.57) among all the starting pitchers on the staff.

But Tufts got that elusive first win against Medicine Hat, with a little help from his teammates. The Bulls turned back the Mavericks 6-2 at Spitz Stadium. Tufts wasn't at his best early in the game, but was aided by two good defensive plays in the second inning that helped snuff out a potential Medicine Hat rally.

Catcher Joel Blake picked a runner off first base who had reached on a base hit, and left fielder Josh Lowden threw out another runner who was attempting to go from first to third on a double.

But after that Tufts settled down, and was solid for the remaining four innings he pitched. Tufts also started a double play in the third. He caught a line drive that was hit back to the mound, then tossed to shortstop Dustin Bissonnette to double a base runner off second.

Tufts went six innings, allowed one run on four hits, had three strike outs and walked two. Jared Mortenson pitched a scoreless seventh. Jimmy Munnil came in for the eighth and gave up one run. Steve Hogue closed out in the ninth, and made a good play for the first out, snaring a hard-hit low liner and then threw to first base for the put out. Zach Rhodes ended the game in spectacular fashion with a diving catch in right field.

The Bulls had a 12-hit game, with number nine hitter Brady Farrington leading the way. The first year second base man was 3 for 3 with a walk, a run scored, and an RBI. Lead off hitter Eric Dorton was 2 for 5 with two RBI's. Bissonnette was 2 for 5 with an RBI, and Lowden was also 2 for 5 with a run scored.

The Bulls were also solid defensively with an error-free game to move their record to 10 and 11. The Weyburn Beavers are the visitors Sunday for the first of two games. It's an early start at Spitz Stadium with the first pitch going out at 6:05 pm.

The Bulls host the Edmonton Prospects for two games July 1st, to celebrate Canada Day and the club's Tenth Anniversary. The game that was rained out on June 6th will be made up on Canada Day. It's an afternoon game and begins at 1 pm. The regularly scheduled game goes at 7:35 pm, a half hour later than the usual time. Fans are invited to remain after the game and come on the field to watch the fireworks over Henderson Lake.
