Sawyer Comes Through In Dramatic Fashion
The third time was a charm for Jesse Sawyer. The Bulls second year third baseman had two opportunites to drive in the go ahead run for the Bulls, but struck out in the sixth, and again in the eighth, with runners in scoring position.
But Sawyer got a third chance in the tenth inning, and this time he came through with a clutch base hit to score Zach Rhodes with the winning run in an 8-7 win over the Medicine Hat Mavericks Friday night at Spitz Stadium.
The Bulls built up a 5-1 lead after two innings, but Medicine Hat battled back to to close the gap to 5-4 with three runs in the top of the third. The Bulls increased their lead to 7-4 with two runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Medicine Hat continued to chip away, with two runs in the fifth, and another in the sixth to tie the game at 7-7. The game remained tied until Sawyer's walk off single in the tenth. Although Jamie Mitchell almost won it in the bottom of the ninth. The Bulls' first year catcher hammered a pitch to deep left field and just missed a home run by a couple of feet. The ball caromed off the wall for a double, but Brady Farrington was thrown out at the plate and Eric Dorton struck out to end the threat.
Steve Hogue retired the Mavericks in order in the top of the tenth. And Dustin Bissonnette walked to lead off the Bulls tenth. Rhodes reached on a fielder's choice, when Bissonette was erased on the force out at second. An intentional walk to Josh Lwoden brought Sawyer to the plate. He sent the crowd of 900-plus home happy with a single deep to left field that scored Rhodes.
Steve Hogue was the winning pitcher in relief of his twin brother Rob, who started the game. Vauxhall Academy grad Brandon Petite also saw his first action for the Bulls. The Houston Astros draft pick pitched the sixth inning, with Richard Pharr taking over in the seventh and eighth.
He gave way to Steve Hogue, who allowed one hit in two innings of scoreless relief.
Josh Lowden went 2 for 3 with three RBIs. He also made a tremendous diving catch in left field that saved a run, and maybe the ball game, in the eighth. Rhodes was 2 for 4 with a double, and Sawyer was also 2 for 4 with the game winning RBI.
The win moves the Bulls record to 9 and 11. The home stand continues Saturday night with Medicine Hat the visitors again. Game time at Spitz Stadium is 7:05 pm.
