Bulls Snap a Three Game Losing Streak
The Toronto Blue Jays have Roy Halladay and the Lethbridge Bulls have Adam Reynolds. It's probably unfair to compare the Guelph, Ontario native to the Blue Jays ace and Cy Young Award winner. But when Reynolds takes the mound for the Bulls it appears to have the same effect on the team that it does when "Doc" gets the start for the Jays.
The Bulls stopper went the distance Sunday for an 11-6 win over the Medicine Hat Mavericks and snapped the team's three game losing streak in the process. Reynolds threw 148 pitches and managed to get out of tight spots in the seventh, eighth and ninth with mininal damage.
Coach Scott Rhodes said after the game that it was Reynolds decision to go the distance. "He (Reynolds) knew he wasn't going to get another start for a week", says Rhodes. "So he made up his mind he was going to finish the game. And it helped the team in more ways then one", adds Rhodes, " we wrapped up the homestand with a win and our bullpen will be fresh and rested when we begin our longest road trip of the season on Tuesday".
Reynolds allowed six runs on ten hits, struck out eight and walked five to improve his record to a league-leading 4 and 0.
The Bulls broke open a close game with seven runs in the seventh inning. Trailing 4-3 going to the bottom of the seventh, Ryan MacDonald lead off with a walk, Eric Dorton singled, and another walk to Dustin Bissonnette loaded the bases. Designated hitter Jamie Mitchell followed with another walk, bringing MacDonald home to tie the game.
Then Jesse Sawyer singled to left field, driving home two more runs. Scott Hornstra reached on an error and Zach Rhodes followed up with a two RBI double. Brendon Miller walked and Joel Blake drove him in with a base hit.
The Bulls sent eleven batters to the plate in the seventh inning to put the game out of reach. Sawyer broke out of a mini-slump going 3 for 4 with 3 RBI and the game winning hit. Blake was 2 for 4 and Bissonnette continues to swing a hot bat, going 2 for 3 with two RBI, a sacrifice fly and two runs scored.
The win gives the Bulls a record of 5 and 6 as they begin a nine game road trip Tuesday in Saskatoon. Following another game in Saskatoon, the Bulls are in Yorkton Thursday (June 16), then play Friday and Saturday in Melville, and back to Yorkton Sunday (June 21) to wrap up the Saskatchewan portion of the road trip.
The Bulls visit Medicine Hat for a pair of games June 22 and 23, then finish up the nine day road stint in Okotoks June 24. The next home game is Friday, June 26 with the Medicine Hat Mavericks the visitors. Its Country 95 radio "Pack The Park Night", game time is 7:05 pm.
